Welcome to The Imagery!

In 2026, we are celebrating 28 years as The Imagery and the studio (formally Ted Hains Photography) has had more than 35 years of professional photography in the same Burnsville location. Our little family includes Rod, Stephanie, and our Bernedoodle, Posey. Between the studio, family, and caring for parents, life keeps us busy—but we wouldn't have it any other way.

We believe photographs become more valuable with every passing year. That's why our mission is simple: to help families, seniors, business owners, and organizations preserve the people, milestones, and memories that matter most.

Our Studio & Portrait Park

The Imagery is a unique home-based photography studio where creativity lives around every corner. Our home has been transformed into a professional portrait destination featuring two indoor camera rooms and a private outdoor Portrait Park complete with waterfalls, gardens, architectural elements, vintage props, seasonal settings, and countless opportunities for creativity.

Whether you're looking for a classic studio portrait, a natural outdoor setting, or something completely custom, we'll help create an experience that reflects your personality and style. We also travel regularly throughout Minnesota and nationally, and are available to meet your needs for on-location sessions.

Meet the Team

Rod is the lead photographer and co-owner of The Imagery. Stephanie oversees marketing, portrait planning, client experience, and helps families select artwork that beautifully complements their homes and personal style.

Together, we've spent decades helping clients feel comfortable in front of the camera while creating portraits that celebrate life's most meaningful moments.

Stephanie joined Rod in the business after returning to the Midwest from New York City, where her background in theater arts helped develop the creative eye and storytelling approach she brings to every session. Her expertise in styling, planning, and design helps clients feel confident from the first consultation through the final artwork installation.

Rod's Photography Journey

Rod's love of photography began at age seven when he asked his parents, "Why do only grown-ups have cameras?" They responded by giving him his first camera and enrolling him in darkroom classes—an experience that sparked a lifelong passion.

Although he earned degrees in Communication and Mathematics from Moorhead State University, photography remained his calling. Today, Rod is a Master Certified Craftsman Photographer through the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), a distinction achieved by only a small percentage of photographers nationwide.

Throughout his career, Rod has been honored as Twin Cities Photographer of the Year seven times and has also been named Minnesota Photographer of the Year. His work has been featured multiple times in PPA's prestigious Loan Collection, one of the highest honors in professional photography.

More importantly, he remains committed to continually refining his craft, embracing new technology, and creating meaningful portraits for every client who walks through our doors.

Sharing What We've Learned

Over the years, Rod and Stephanie have been invited to speak to photography organizations throughout the Midwest, sharing insights on client experience, business growth, marketing, and photographic excellence. Their passion for education continues through mentoring, content creation, and helping clients understand how to get the most from their portrait experience.

Meet Posey

Many longtime clients remember Pixel, our beloved Goldendoodle, who greeted visitors for more than a decade and helped countless children feel comfortable during their portrait sessions.

Today, Posey proudly carries on that tradition. Our friendly Bernedoodle loves meeting new people, making friends, and helping visitors feel right at home. If you're a dog lover, there's a good chance you'll be greeted by a wagging tail when you arrive.
